Recently, WestJet was advised of CUPE 4070’s committee election results. The company advised the union that they do not intend to meet or negotiate with anyone who is on the Cabin Manager or Onboard Operations lists, as they are contesting the inclusion of these members in the bargaining unit before the CIRB. The employer maintains the position that these members are managers. This is a common employer tactic that serves to delay the process, and cause frustration among our members.
We have always maintained that these two groups are not managers, and do not perform managerial functions in any capacity. It is the position of CUPE 4070 that they will remain a part of our bargaining unit until the CIRB returns with a ruling.
We will be moving forward with committees as they were elected by our members. It is the right of our members, not the company, to determine who represents us on the bargaining committee.
Short term adjustments will be made in order to respond to the company’s demands, however, these members will continue to serve our local in the positions they were elected to.
